Urmston’s Men’s veterans set the standard for the rest of the teams as the club opened their league accounts this weekend.

Urmston Hockey’s Men’s Veterans won 5-0 as they hosted Sale Veterans at Urmston Sports Club.

Goals from Martin Burgess, Steve Coupe, Andy Shenton, and Rick Needham sealed the win in the veterans’ first game of the season.

Owen Monk’s goal sealed the only win in the senior section this weekend as the Men’s 2s beat a resilient St Helen’s side 1-0.

Man of the Match Aaron Kelly impressed on his return as part of a disciplined team performance.

Isobel Thornley’s strike set up a frantic finish for the Ladies’ 1s but they were edged 3-2 by Triton 1s.

Rachel Kelly opened the team’s league account with a sublime first time strike but Triton were saved by the bell as Urmston couldn’t find the equaliser after Thornley’s late goal.

Brooklands 3s sealed a 3-1 win over the Men’s 1s with two late counter attacks after Andy Power had levelled from a penalty corner.

Man of the Match James McLaughlin kept the away side's strikers at bay on a string of penalty corners but Brooklands closed out the game clinically to leave with all three points.

Meanwhile, the Ladies’ 2s fell 2-1 to Glossop Ladies’ 1s despite being only able to field a bare eleven.

The Ladies’ 3s fell 5-0 to a strong Manchester Moss Park side having held the home side to 1-0 until half time.

A second half flurry sealed Moss Park’s win with Jen Power soldiering on despite dislocating and fracturing her thumb.
