Urmston Women’s 1s v Manchester Moss Park 1
0 – 2
Urmston took a few minutes to get into their home game against Moss Park who are somewhat of an unknown entity this season.
The physicality of the game took Urmston back a little as they felt like the target as opposed to the ball.
Moss Park broke and won a short corner which was deflected into the goal as they took the lead.
There were some good attacks by Urmston as they settled into more of a rhythm.
At half time, Urmston were 0 – 2 down following another deflected goal which looped over the keeper and into the net.
The second half saw wave after wave of attacks by Urmston which were repeatedly saved by Moss Park’s keeper.
Urmston pulled the goalkeeper with minutes to go as Moss Park were barely getting out of their half, but it was too late as Urmston lost the game 0 – 2.
Player of the Match went to Georgia Smart-O’Toole for an impressive performance and her resilience throughout the game.
Wally of the Week went to Emma Brady. Following the shrinking of her hockey shoes, Emma bought some new ones with fantastic grip. So fantastic, she kept falling over them.
Urmston Men's 1s v Liverpool Sefton 1
7 - 5
Urmston Men’s 1s were hungry for some points this week. After playing some very good hockey for the past four weeks with no wins, the boys deserved a green square.
The game started very quickly with an aerial ball from Andy Power straight over Liverpool Sefton’s defence to Captain, Tim Querlioz, who then struck a rocket from the baseline that went into the opposition net. 18 seconds into the game and it was already 1 – 0!!
Sefton reacted quickly as they scored two goals not long after Urmston’s opener. The game was on!!
The ball was going back and forth. From great saves by Alfie Ray, good tackles from the Urmston defence, to good runs from Urmston’s attackers. The game had it all and was end to end.
Andy scored a drag flick at 20 minutes and Tim got his second goal at 30 minutes when Robert Aryeetey made a good run into the D with an attempt on goal which was then converted by Tim on the rebound. At half time the work of Urmston had earned them a 3 – 2 lead.
Urmston were determined to get the three points and weren’t going to stop there. It was important to keep the intensity high and the pressure on Sefton who were now behind on the score sheet.
Andy got his second goal in the 42nd minute creating a lead of two goals for Urmston, but Sefton reacted once more by scoring two goals to bring them level. The game was far from over.
Fortunately, Bilal Ahmed found a gap during a short corner and scored Urmston’s fifth goal. Not to be outdone, within one minute, Sefton were level again.
Urmston’s hard work paid off as Andy converted a penalty flick to get his hattrick. Urmston then scored the winning goal in the 70th minute following a run from the forward line leading Tim to find Robert at the back post.
Last season, Urmston achieved 12 points, but at the half way point of this season with a 7 – 5 victory over Liverpool Sefton, they are already on 14 points.
Player of the Match went to Andy Power for his hattrick and crazy aerial balls.
Wally of the Week was awarded to Aaron Kelly for some questionable ‘diving tackles’.
Macclesfield 4 v Urmston Women’s 2s
2 – 2
Urmston Women’s 2s took a late trip to Macclesfield for a 3:30pm pushback which meant two things…. cold and dark.
After a couple of early shots, Ciara Carruthers opened the scoring finishing off a great run up the wing by Georgia Boothroyd.
Macclesfield found an equaliser ten minutes later, but Urmston kept the pressure on. Just before half time, relentless attacking from Ciara, Ines Corbett and Georgia forced a Macclesfield defender into an own goal giving Urmston a well-earned 1 – 2 lead at the break.
The second half saw Grace Wilson everywhere on the left wing, winning challenges and feeding the forwards.
Midfield and defence worked hard both ways, helping to build attacks and shutting down Macclesfield when they made a break. Even with all of the effort, Macclesfield managed to sneak in a second goal to level the game.
Urmston pushed right to the final whistle, showing brilliant work rate and determination across the pitch.
Player of the Match went to Grace for nonstop pressure on the wing and constant support going forward. Shoutouts also to Georgia, Ciara and Ines for their strong attacking play.
Wally of the Week goes to Georgia for thinking she wasn’t playing well, but she absolutely was.
Sale 2 v Urmston Men’s 2s
3 – 2
Urmston travelled to Sale for their last game before Christmas for a late pushback at 4:30pm.
The game started well with Urmston commanding the ball and, bar a couple of Sale breakaways, commanding the play.
Urmston took a deserved lead thanks to Sohail Dar and some decent team play. However, Sale equalised just before half time from a rare shot on goal.
The half time team talk was to continue in the same vein and keep going. However, Urmston were reduced to ten men by the umpires and Sale took advantage by creating a 3 – 1 lead.
Urmston didn’t give up and along came Player of the Match, Andy Shenton, with a goal of the season contender as he danced around five Sale players to break into the D and unleash a piledriver into the Sale net.
The 3 – 2 scoreline leaves Urmston in third place in the league. A fantastic start to the season and something the team can build upon into the second half.
Urmston Women’s Development Team v Brooklands Development Team
Cancelled as the pitch was frozen
Under 12s Tournament
The last tournament of 2025 was a resounding success for Urmston’s Under 12s.
The boys got off to a flying start and continued in this vein throughout their tournament.
They didn’t concede a goal in their five games which is a testament to the defence, mainly Elliot and Fintan with Georgia guiding from the goal.
Slick passing from Ray and Seb pushing the ball up front to Daniel and Connor, piling the pressure on in the D.
Special mention to Dexter for his awesome dribbling skills which dominated the field as well as his passing to spread the game.
The boys came away with four wins and a draw.
The girls equally had a great tournament against some very tough opposition.
Annie was Player of the Day for the second tournament running, closely contested by Jess and Elizabeth.
Willow battled hard and never gave up driving the ball down the right wing.
Connor and Chloe were solid in defence, pushing the ball to safety.
Georgia had obviously had her Weetabix and played like a ninja in goal for the girls.
Well done everyone!!
