Urmston Ladies 2s vs Bowdon 7
3-1
Urmston Ladies 2s put in a brilliant team performance against Bowdon 7s, coming from an early setback to take a well-earned win. Bowdon opened the scoring early on, but Urmston responded by settling into their passing game and moving the ball confidently up the pitch. The younger players in particular caused Bowdon plenty of problems with their pace and movement.
The equaliser came through Nell, who made a great run and showed real composure to flick the ball in at the near post. The teams went into half time level at 1–1, with Bowdon reduced to ten briefly after a green card just before the break.
Urmston continued to battle hard in the second half and started to take control. Edie made a strong run and squared the ball to the top of the D for Urmston to take the lead, before Edie rounded off a lovely team move to make it three, following some excellent passing through the pitch.
It was a real all-round team effort, with solid defending, hard-working midfield play, and plenty of attacking threat.
Players’ Player went to Nell, who looked right at home and worked tirelessly throughout.
Wally of the Week went to Maisie for her “enthusiastic” tackling earning her a green card.
A great performance and a well-deserved result for the 2s.
Urmston Ladies 1s vs Clwb Hoci Eirias 1
0-6
Urmston Women’s 1s made the long trip to Colwyn Bay to face second-placed Club Eirias in what was always going to be a tough fixture. Despite the challenge, Urmston started well and showed great resilience in the first half, defending wave after wave of pressure. The defence stood firm through at least ten short corners, with Eirias eventually breaking through once, followed by a second goal to make it 2–0 at half time. The scoreline didn’t fully reflect Urmston’s efforts, with plenty of hard work and discipline across the pitch.
The second half saw Eirias move the ball well and make their passing game count, adding four more goals as they continued to apply pressure. Despite the result, Urmston kept battling and showed good spirit throughout against a strong and well-organised side.
Player of the Match was shared between Kit Young, for some fantastic saves under pressure, and Emily Fell, for her solid and composed defending.
Wally of the Week went to Gemma Booth for nearly driving off with her boot open – and then realising she’d played the match with her skirt on back to front!
The team made the most of the away day afterwards, with a trip to the beach and a few brave souls even taking a dip in the sea. A big thank you to everyone who made the journey to Wales - great commitment and team spirit shown all round.
Urmston Men’s 1s vs West Derby 1
4-7
Urmston Men’s 1s took on West Derby 1s in a fast-paced and open game that started dramatically, with the visitors scoring inside the opening 20 seconds. Urmston responded well and quickly settled into the match, finding goals of their own and creating plenty of chances in the D.
Despite the strong attacking intent and sustained pressure from Urmston, West Derby remained clinical and managed to keep the upper hand throughout the game, eventually running out 7–4 winners. The home side were unlucky at times not to add more to their tally, but West Derby proved more decisive in front of goal on the day.
There were positives to take from Urmston’s performance, particularly in attack, with good link-up play and a high work rate across the pitch, even if the result was a frustrating one.
Player of the Match went to Oli Cooper for his two goals and for winning a penalty stroke.
Wally of the Week went to Humza Ahmed for getting involved in a debate and a few early dodgy first touches on the ball.
Plenty of effort and attacking threat shown, with fine margins making the difference this time.
Urmston Development Team vs Macclesfield Development
1-3
Urmston Ladies Development put in a really strong performance against a very well-organised Macclesfield side. The first half was particularly impressive, with Urmston holding their own and competing well across the pitch despite facing a strong opposition. Macclesfield managed to edge in front before half time, leaving Urmston 1–0 down at the break.
There were some great partnerships on show, with Holly working brilliantly down the left and linking up well with Ella to cause problems going forward. Urmston came out fighting in the second half and were rewarded when Georgia Boothroyd scored a fantastic goal to bring the game back level.
With only 10 players against Macclesfield’s 11 (and a sub), the second half was always going to be a tough ask. Despite the numbers, Urmston kept battling and showed great determination, but two quick goals from Macclesfield late on put the game just out of reach. A really positive performance full of effort and teamwork to build on.
