Urmston Women's 1s v Bowdon 3
0 - 4
As the game began, the rain was quite refreshing and kept the team cool as they battled to keep Bowdon at bay.
Throughout the first half, Urmston defended well and, coupled with some good saves from Tamsyn Grey, prevented the majority of Bowdon’s attacks.
Whilst a lot of the second half was about defence for Urmston as Bowdon frequently refreshed their team with young substitutes, there were some good breakaways up the pitch to attack and create chances on goal.
Urmston prevented Bowdon from converting a single short corner which, given there were in excess of ten, shows their true character and determination to fight regardless of the challenges faced.
Player of the Match went to Amy Querlioz for 110% effort throughout the game, even taking a ball to the head and carrying on.
Wally of the Week goes to Emma Brady for having a strop and making a crunching tackle (which the sideline made sound worse than it actually was) earning her a green card.
Urmston Men's 1s v Preston 2
3 - 3
On a very wet Saturday afternoon, Urmston did not get off to a great start and were 0 – 2 down.
Urmston’s spirit and resilience soon kicked in and their comeback began.
Andy Power converted a penalty flick to get the ball rolling, followed by a spectacular deflection from Iain Lawrence to score the second goal.
In only his second game for the Men’s 1s, George Callaghan put the ball in the back of the net to bring the scoreline to 3 – 2 to Urmston.
Whilst Preston got a late equalizer, Urmston showed discipline and determination throughout to get the score draw.
Urmston Men's 2s v Timperley 7
6 - 3
So when did Urmston have a monsoon season?
With one match under their belt in an impressive win away at South Manchester last week, Urmston were not put off by the horrendous weather.
With a bumper 16 players available this weekend, which included a great mix of youth and experience, Urmston took the game to Timperley from the off.
The Urmston pressure paid off with two early goals from Ric Clarke and Sohail Dar.
A breakaway from Timperley saw them claw one back before Urmston’s Player of the Match, and Captain Marvel, Drew Illsley, scored the first of his brace.
Further goals from Oliver Cooper and Nate Illsley, as well as another from Drew, gave Urmston a comfortable victory over an experienced Timperley side.
Special mentions go to Savith Soni, Zak Ahmed, James Coupe and Nate for their non-stop efforts and tireless running. Keep it up, lads.
Wally of the Week goes to Cam Ross for getting a green card. It was, however, very close given Martin Smith managed to find a muscle in his leg and pull it (again).
Urmston Women's 2s v Manchester Moss Park 3
0 - 0
The first game of the season for Urmston Women’s 2s took them to Manchester Moss Park where, thankfully, the weather had cleared.
With a strong start to the game, Urmston had a number of opportunities whilst also making sure that they were back to defend any counters that came their way.
Having not played as a team before, the individuals began to gel more as they progressed into the second half and created more chances with some good shots on goal.
A good performance which highlighted the potential of the team as they continue to work together.
Player of the Match went to Suji Banerjee with another debut, this time for the 2s, as she gave a solid performance on the left side of the pitch.
Wally of the Week goes to Grace Gauntlett-Hessing for (not very gracefully) falling to the floor in the D and having a lie down in the sunshine, pinned to the floor as the ball was looped over her to clear it, leading to the umpire stopping the game as they thought she was injured. Thankfully she wasn’t, she was just being our Grace.
