Urmston Teams Battle Through Tough Set of Fixtures

Urmston Teams Battle Through Tough Set of Fixtures

Rachael Power10 Feb - 18:55

Reports from the weekend of 31 January 2026

Urmston Ladies 1s vs Brooklands-Poynton 2
1-3

Urmston Ladies 1s took on Brooklands 2s in a competitive and well-fought game. After Brooklands opened the scoring, Urmston dug in and the first half remained an even battle. Brooklands struck early in the second half, but Urmston responded positively, turning defence into attack time and time again. The pressure paid off when Georgia O’Toole-Smart drove into the D and set up Kate Entwistle to finish well.
The final score of 3–1 didn’t fully reflect how close the contest was, with Urmston pushing right to the end.

Player of the Match went to Izzy Povah for her constant running and tracking back, while Wally of the Week went to Kate Entwistle for not quite getting out of the way of a lifted ball in time — in what felt like slow motion!

Urmston Men’s 1s vs Bebington
0-5

Urmston put in a solid first-half performance and were well in the game early on, matching the opposition and creating some good chances. The only goal of the first half came from what was awarded as a short corner, although it was felt to be a harsh decision, giving the opposition a 1–0 lead at the break.

The second half proved more difficult as fitness levels, momentum, and a few decisions didn’t quite go Urmston’s way. Despite this, Urmston continued to create opportunities, with three or four clear chances, including two excellent saves from the opposition goalkeeper to deny what could easily have been goals. On another day, Urmston could have been right back in the game.
Although the opposition may have edged it overall, the scoreline didn’t fully reflect the performance or the effort put in by Urmston across the pitch.

Players’ Player went to Jamie Livingstone for a strong and confident display on the ball — great to see you back out there and looking forward to seeing you back at your best level. Welcome back!
Wally of the Week could only go to Sam (no explanation needed!).

Urmston Men’s 2s vs Bolton 2
3-5

Urmston Men’s 2s travelled away to face Bolton 2s in a tough, physical encounter. A difficult first half saw Urmston go into the break 4-0 down, with Bolton’s physicality disrupting Urmston’s usual flow and putting pressure on some of the younger players.
The second half was much more positive, with Urmston showing great character to pull three goals back. Andy P scored twice, with Andy Shents also finding the net, as Urmston grew into the game and played with more confidence. Despite the 5-3 loss, there were plenty of positives to take, and a valuable learning experience for the younger players in the squad.

Urmston Ladies 2s vs Sale 3
0-1

Urmston Ladies 2s faced a tough late fixture away to Sale 3 in dark and wet conditions, with pushback delayed due to an overrunning game. Early on, Urmston went down to 10 players after Ellyn was injured, and Sale took advantage down the left to score in the first half.

Despite being a player short, Urmston played some great hockey and moved the ball well. Becky and Moe combined nicely through midfield, creating chances for Ciara and Suji, and Urmston were unlucky not to equalise when a Ciara effort was ruled out for being just outside the D.

The team kept pushing right to the end but couldn’t quite find the goal, with the match finishing 1-0.

Players’ Player went to Suji for her tireless work rate, and Wally of the Week to Ellyn for completing a full warm-up before getting injured.
Urmston Development Team vs Horwich
2-1
Urmston Development Team put in a strong and encouraging performance against Horwich 2, with a squad of juniors supported well by a few seniors at the back. The mix gave the younger players confidence to play their game and learn as the match went on.

Urmston started brightly and were rewarded when Ciara opened the scoring after around 20 minutes. Rosa and Georgia worked tirelessly in midfield, covering plenty of ground and helping disrupt Horwich’s play. Horwich responded with a well-worked goal and later added a second from a short corner, despite a strong first block from Rosa.

There were lots of positives across the pitch, with the juniors passing well, listening to instructions, and working hard until the final whistle. Plenty to be proud of and lots to build on next week.

U12s Tournament Match Report

Urmston U12s were in action at the boys’ tournament this afternoon and enjoyed a really positive day of hockey, finishing with three wins, one draw and one loss, with the sun even making an appearance for once!

Despite travelling with a depleted squad, the team were brilliantly supported by players kindly lent from the opposing teams, allowing everyone to get plenty of game time. Our juniors were really impressive throughout, showing great confidence and composure, particularly in front of goal, scoring well against teams who all had dedicated goalkeepers.

There were lots of encouraging signs across the matches, with good teamwork, effort, and a willingness to learn and support each other on show.

U12s Players’ Player this week went to Ray L for a standout performance.
From two weeks ago, U12 Girls Players’ Player went to Lizzie O-S, and U12 Boys Players’ Player to Daniel C — well deserved mentions for all three.

A brilliant afternoon of hockey and another great step forward for our junior section.
